Portuguese is one of the most spoken languages in the world and the lingua franca of over 200 million people on four continents.
Oxford School offers courses in Portuguese as a second language to non-native speakers who want to learn or improve their knowledge for personal, professional, academic and/or social reasons. These courses run all year round including July, August and September.
Levels of Portuguese at Oxford School are graded in accordance with the Council of Europe Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Types of courses
Private Lessons (1 to 3 students)
Lessons organised for one, two or three students with total flexibility of timetables.
Group Lessons (4 to 8 students)
Group lessons are organised for various levels of knowledge, run all year round including the summer months, and last for 4 weeks with 10 or 15 hours of lessons per week.
Students are placed according to their level of knowledge of the written and spoken language. The students’ development is evaluated throughout the course and, on completion, students are awarded a certificate stating their performance and the level they have reached.
Courses can include cultural activities adapted to the students’ areas of interest: history, architecture, art (museums, historic monuments, palaces, churches, exhibitions), fairs, natural parks, beaches, wine-tasting, gastronomy, music, arts and crafts, etc.
Oxford School has an accommodation service to assist its foreign students which offers the following options:
- Halls of residence;
- Hotels and Guest Houses;
- Host families. *
* Accommodation with a host family is one of the options which gives you the greatest opportunity to practise the language outside the classroom and to get to know other cultures and lifestyles. This is also the most economical option.
Beginner (40 hours)
The first 40 hours of a Portuguese beginner’s course prepare the student to interact in a limited number of day-to-day situations and are aimed at students who have never studied Portuguese or have a very limited knowledge of the language.
Elementary (40 hours)
This course is aimed at students who have already studied Portuguese for at least 40 hours or may perhaps never have studied the language formally but can communicate in day-to-day situations. This level is also recommended for students whose first language is Spanish. It aims to enable students to communicate in simple day-to-day or professional situations.
Intermediate (80 hours)
The intermediate level comprises 80 hours, divided into two modules of 40 hours. Each module aims to broaden the students’ ability to communicate, preparing them to interact accurately and with confidence in day-to-day and professional situations.
Advanced (80 hours)
In the Advanced level courses students extend all communicative abilities such as discursive, grammatical and lexical structures. They learn to interact with ease in both familiar and unfamiliar situations, so that they can deal successfully in a work or social environment in a Portuguese speaking country.
